HOMEWORK: For the following sentences written in Esperanto, identify the subject and verb. You can do this by copying the sentence to a word document. Highlight the subject in red and the verb in yellow. E-mail this document to Dr. Voss with your name in the document title. (Hint: the sentence translator works both ways!)
Try to identify the subject and verb before you look up the translation, but check your work when you are done. Don’t worry, they are easy!

I thought that this language was neat. It is one that I would probably not try to learn, but I think it is interesting that someone was interested enough in opening the lines of communication between cultures that they created a language.

I thought this was interesting. It seems odd to me that someone would take the time to do this. I think it would be fun to try to learn this language.

I thought that it was pretty interesting. It was cool to see my sentences translated. I don't think I could come up with a new language but if you speak more than one language fluently then it might be a lot easier to mix and match them together. I think the SIMS 2 speaks Esperanto!
It's important to note that Esperanto only uses romance and Germanic languages. This exclusion of Arabic and Asian languages is quite detrimental to the concept. Though, it does overcome some of the harder points of learning English, despite its syntax being based nearly entirely on English.

This is an interesting concept. There is certainly an increasing language barrier in the US and it becomes more and more of a controversy all the time. Esperanto could be a possible solution if you could convince Americans to put the effort into learning a new language.

Only sentence 2. "Mi volas lerni Esperanton" is correct.
The translations in Esperanto were made by the program in traduku.net which translates approximately in what is called fuŝesperanto.
Note that Arabic and Chinese are not more excluded in Esperanto than in English. See etymology and find "↓ ara". You'll find many more words coming from Arabic than you could imagine. (75 now, but I'll add more later). Chinese is not a good candidate for languages which use tones to render emotions.
Japanese, contrarily to Chinese, has produced a certain amount of words which are internationally understood, and obviously were adopted in Esperanto. Esperanto vocabulary is chiefly based on the indo-european family.
The syntax of Esperanto is comparable to many other languages than just English.

Saluton! Se ĝi helpus vin, jen kelkaj korektoj por la eraraj frazoj supre. (Hi! In case it helps, here are a few corrections for the malformed sentences above):
1. La knabo kuras rapide.
(kur- is a root for "run". Adding the suffix -oj makes it a plural noun, so kuroj means "multiple acts of running". The suffix -as makes it a present-tense verb instead, so kuras means "is running; runs.")
2. Mi volas lerni Esperanton.
(Perfect!)
3. Li ŝtelis mian taco-n!
("taco" is the direct object, so it takes the -n ending, also known as the accusative case. If "taco" were a native word in Esperanto, we'd simply write tacon, but because it is foreign we add the grammatical ending with a dash. For comparison: "He stole my sandwich!" = Li ŝtelis mian sandviĉon!)
4. Ŝi piediris hejmen de la lernejo.
(With an e, hejmen means "to home". Ŝi piediris hejmen. = "She walked home." The English verb "walk" can be confusing because it can be both transitive and intransitive. We say things like "I walk the dog" and "I walk home", but in the first sense "walk" is a transitive verb meaning "to make (something) walk", and in the second sense it is an intransitive verb, with an implied "to..." after it. )
5. La hundo mordis min sur la pugo.
(Li means "he"; La is the definite article. The word peco means "bit" only in the sense of "a piece; a part." mord- is the root for "bite", and the suffix -is makes it past tense.)

Jeff the presentation was great you present yourself very well. The language is very cool and I'm glad that you were the one teaching it you explained it very clearly while making jokes and keeping the classroom very light. There is a great technical part with all of the interesting sites you used. Once again great lesson and thank you for your demonstration.

I think Esperanto is pretty interesting. Listening to it, it sounds so much like Spanish, and then suddenly you hear French words too! I think it would be very difficult to create a language like this one.

I thought that it was interesting to see how someone can create their own language. This particular language was pretty cool, considering that you could see a mix of a few different languages. Spanish, a little bit of French, ect. Communication is very important and it is neat to see new languages developed.
